Psalm 7 brings us into the tension of false accusation and the longing for true justice. David cries out to the Lord while surrounded by those who seek to condemn him. In the face of accusation, David entrusts his cause to the righteous Judge of all the earth.

The psalm opens with refuge: “O LORD my God, in you do I take refuge.” Before David defends himself, he first places himself under the protection of the Lord. Safety is not found in argument or self-vindication, but in the character of God. The Lord is the One who delivers, the One who judges rightly, and the One who knows the truth hidden beneath the accusations of men.

Yet David does not hesitate to speak of his own innocence. He invites the Lord to examine his life: “If there is wrong in my hands… let the enemy pursue my soul.” These words may seem striking at first, especially for readers shaped by the Psalms of repentance that appear elsewhere in the Psalter. But David is not claiming sinless perfection. Rather, he is answering specific accusations brought against him. In the matter at hand, he stands blameless.

Here the psalm lifts our eyes beyond David to Christ. David’s appeal to righteousness serves as a shadow of the greater Son of David who would one day stand before His accusers in perfect purity. Jesus alone could truly make the claim David makes in part. Though falsely accused, mocked, and condemned, Christ remained without sin. Before both earthly courts and the tribunal of heaven, He stood entirely righteous.

This truth has profound implications for those who belong to Him. By grace we are united to Christ, and His righteousness is counted as ours. Because of this, the accusations that rise against us—whether from others, from the world, or even from our own troubled hearts—do not have the final word. The believer’s standing before God rests not on fluctuating feelings or human verdicts, but on the finished work of Christ.

Psalm 7 therefore teaches us how to deal with accusation. Like David, we bring our case before the Lord rather than defending ourselves with bitterness or despair. We entrust our reputation, our justice, and our vindication to the righteous Judge. At the same time, we remember that our ultimate defense is not our own righteousness, but the imputed righteousness of Christ given to us through faith.

What begins in Psalm 7 as a personal prayer of defense expands into something far greater. David’s plea grows into a prayer for justice throughout the whole earth. The psalm moves from the distress of one man to the universal reign of God’s righteousness. The Lord judges the peoples, restrains evil, and establishes the upright in heart.

In Christ, this hope reaches its fulfillment. The One who was falsely accused now reigns as the righteous Judge of all the earth. And those who take refuge in Him need not fear the final verdict. The God who knows every heart will vindicate His people, and the righteousness of Christ will stand forever as their defense.

Lyrics

O Lord, my God, on Thy help I depend;

From all that pursue me O save and defend;

Lest they like a lion should rend me at will,

While no one is near me their raging to still.

When wronged without cause

I have kindness returned;

But if I my neighbor maltreated and spurned,

My soul let the enemy seize for his prey,

My life and honor in dust let him lay.

O Lord, in Thy wrath stay the rage of my foes;

Awake, and Thy judgment ordained interpose.

Let peoples surround Thee

and wait at Thy feet,

While o'er them for judgment

Thou takest Thy seat.

All nations of men shall be judged by the Lord;

To me, O Great Savior, just judgment accord,

As faithful and righteous in Christ I am hid,

Found in integrity covered by Him.

Establish the righteous, let evil depart,

For God Who is just

tries the thoughts of the heart.

In God for defense

I have placed all my trust;

The upright He saves and He judges the just.

The Lord with the wicked has readied His bow,

But if they repent, His mercy they'll know;

By manifold ruin for others prepared

They surely at last

shall themselves be ensnared.

Because He is righteous His praise I will sing,

Thanksgiving and honor to Him I will bring,

I sing to the Lord on Whose grace I rely,

Lifting the Name of the Lord O Most High.

Lifting the Name of the Lord O Most High.

Psalm 7

In You Do I Take Refuge

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.

[1] O LORD my God, in you do I take refuge;

save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,

[2] lest like a lion they tear my soul apart,

rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.

[3] O LORD my God, if I have done this,

if there is wrong in my hands,

[4] if I have repaid my friend with evil

or plundered my enemy without cause,

[5] let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it,

and let him trample my life to the ground

and lay my glory in the dust. Selah

[6] Arise, O LORD, in your anger;

lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;

awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.

[7] Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you;

over it return on high.

[8] The LORD judges the peoples;

judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness

and according to the integrity that is in me.

[9] Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,

and may you establish the righteous—

you who test the minds and hearts,

O righteous God!

[10] My shield is with God,

who saves the upright in heart.

[11] God is a righteous judge,

and a God who feels indignation every day.

[12] If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;

he has bent and readied his bow;

[13] he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,

making his arrows fiery shafts.

[14] Behold, the wicked man conceives evil

and is pregnant with mischief

and gives birth to lies.

[15] He makes a pit, digging it out,

and falls into the hole that he has made.

[16] His mischief returns upon his own head,

and on his own skull his violence descends.

[17] I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness,

and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High. (ESV)
